According to research from the HomeOwners Alliance and reallymoving, based on over 700,000 removal quotes collected across 13 years, a clear seasonal pattern shows up every year.

The same research found the last Friday in August is typically the single busiest moving day of the year, with around four times more households moving than on an average day. It also found 85% of removal firms report more delays on the busiest moving days, most often caused by late fund transfers on completion day or keys not being released on time, not by the removal company itself.
Why this matters for your move
A quieter date does not change your legal completion day, but it changes how much competition there is for removal slots around it. Fewer people trying to book the same week generally means more availability, more flexibility on timing, and less pressure on the team doing the job.
If your completion date is flexible, or you have some choice over when you move within a chain, a few practical things follow from the data above:
- Avoid the last week of August if you can. This is when demand peaks nationally, and Essex is no exception.
- Midweek beats Friday. Tuesday to Thursday sees noticeably less demand than Friday, Saturday or Monday.
- Winter has more availability. January and February are quieter months industry-wide, which can work in your favour if your move is not weather-dependent.
- Book early regardless of date. Even in quieter periods, the best slots on any given day still go first.
