Spain is a long way south, and there are two main ways to reach it. For most moves the Bay of Biscay ferry from Portsmouth or Plymouth straight to Santander or Bilbao is the efficient choice, landing you in northern Spain and saving the long drive through France. The alternative is the full road route down through France and over the border. From the north it is then a run to wherever you are settling, whether that is Barcelona and the east, Madrid in the centre, or the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca in the south.
A few things shape the plan for your move:
- Timing: this is a multi-day move. The Biscay crossing alone is around twenty hours, and the Costas are a further drive south once you land, so we plan around sailings and your dates.
- Access at both ends: Spanish apartment blocks with small lifts, gated urbanisations on the Costas, and tight old-town streets all need checking, along with access at your Essex property.
- The islands: a move to the Balearics or the Canaries adds a sea leg beyond the mainland, so tell us early if you are heading to Mallorca, Ibiza or the Canary Islands and we will plan the extra crossing.
- Customs paperwork: Spain is in the EU, so most people moving their main home bring belongings in free of import duty and VAT under the EU relief for personal effects, handled by Spanish customs. It usually wants your NIE number, proof of your Spanish address and a detailed inventory, and we prepare the declaration.
